BKU (Doaba) opposes land acquisition by govt for Urban Estate

Leaders of the Bharti Kisan Union (Doaba) met with farmers of village Bhullarai today to express solidarity against the government’s decision to acquire around 200 acres of agricultural land for a proposed ‘New Urban Estate’ residential colony. The farmers have strongly opposed the move, calling it an act of high-handedness on the part of government.

Led by senior union leader Harbhajan Singh Bajwa of Malikpur, the delegation was informed by local farmers that they are unwilling to part with their land, which is their only source of livelihood. Most families in the village are dependent solely on agriculture for their livelihood.

Speaking on the occasion, Harbhajan Singh Bajwa, along with other union leaders including Makhan Singh Todarpur, Baldev Singh Bajwa, Joginder Pal Singh and Raja Singh Jagjitpur, condemned the proposed acquisition. “This is a clear case of government coercion. Acquiring farmers’ land without their consent is unacceptable and unjust,” Bajwa said.

The union warned that approximately 60 farming families would be rendered jobless if the land acquisition goes through. “For many of these families, agriculture is not just an occupation—it’s their only means of survival,” added the leaders.

The BKU (Doaba) announced a major village meeting on Monday (July 14) at 12 noon, where the next course of action will be decided. State president of the union, Sardar Manjeet Singh Raie, is expected to attend and lead the planning of the agitation strategy.

Prominent local figures present at the gathering included Kuldeep Singh Jagjitpur, DC Singh Jagjitpur, Giani Balbir Singh, Harjinder Singh (president, Cooperative Society), Mohan Singh, Harpal Singh, Kulwinder Singh, Jaswant Singh, Gursharan Singh, Harminder Singh, Jinder Singh, Mangal Singh, Gurbaksh Singh, Gurdawar Singh, Paramjit Singh and Amandeep Singh.
