Reliance Industries’ digital arm Jio Platforms has rolled out a virtual desktop option for users of its set-top boxes. Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance and India’s richest person, intends to convert millions of screens on televisions across the country into personal computers.

According to the official website of Jio, JioPC is a virtual desktop service designed to work, learn, and create. Whether you’re browsing the web, using productivity apps, engaging with educational tools, or attending online classes. JioPC ensures a smooth, seamless experience for all your needs,” reads the statement.

According to TechCrunch, the service provides a cloud-powered desktop experience via Jio’s set-top box. The box is either bundled for free with Jio’s home broadband plans. One can also buy it separately for Rs 5,499 (approximately $64).

Currently in its free trial phase and accessible through a waitlist, the service allows users to turn their TV into a virtual PC by simply connecting a keyboard and mouse after receiving an invite and setting up their account. Open the JioPC app: When you turn on your TV connected to the
Jio Set Top Box, navigate to the apps section. Now, select the JioPC icon from the list.
Time to connect keyboard and mouse: Customers are required to connect one’s keyboard and mouse to the Jio Set Top Box through the available USB ports or Bluetooth, depending on their device.
Set up your JioPC account: Your personal details will be displayed automatically here. Just click on the Continue button to proceed.
Start using JioPC: Now you can click on ‘Launch Now’ and start using your JioPC for education, work, and more.
Presently, the service has a number of limitations. For example, it does not support external devices such as cameras or printers. The service has the open-source LibreOffice suite included, but if you want to use Microsoft Office applications, you can only do so from the built-in web browser.
