Three young fencers from Jammu and Kashmir have been selected to represent India at the 2025 Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) World University Games, set to take place in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, from July 17 to 22.

Shreya Gupta, Rishika Khajuria and Sufiyan Wahid Sohil were chosen based on their performances at the national trials held at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), according to the J&K Amateur Fencing Association. While Gupta took the top spot in the Sabre category, Sohil ranked first in Epee, and Khajuria finished third in Sabre.

Before the trials, all three fencers had impressed at the All India Inter-University Fencing Championship, hosted by Jammu University, where they represented GNDU and secured medals.

These athletes already have national and international experience and continue to make Jammu and Kashmir proud with their achievements.

The J&K Amateur Fencing Association congratulated the fencers on their selection and praised their dedication.

President Nisha Sharma, General Secretary Bhanu Vijay Sharma, and Treasurer Sanjay Gupta expressed full confidence in their potential.

"We are proud of their hard work and commitment. We wish them success at the upcoming Games in Germany," the association said in a statement.

Fencing has steadily grown in popularity among youth in Jammu and Kashmir. In May 2025, the J&K Girls Fencing Team won a bronze medal in the Sabre Team Event at the 7th Khelo India Youth Games held in Bihar.

That team included international fencer Subhanaya Sharma, along with Bhavya Jamwal, Eknoor Kour and Aahana Gupta. Their impressive teamwork and skill brought national recognition. Surjeet Kour managed and guided the team, while Rashid Ahmed Choudhary, Supriya Chouhan and Maninder Pal Singh praised the achievement as a proud moment for the Union Territory.
