'That Incident Broke Me': Singer Amaal Mallik Reveals Ex-Girlfriend Dumped Him Due To His Muslim Identity After 5 Years Of Dating
Singer Amaal Mallik, who usually keeps his personal life private, recently opened up about his most painful breakup. He revealed that his ex-girlfriend dumped him because of his Muslim identity and because her parents did not approve of his career as a musician. The breakup left him heartbroken, and it happened around the time he was working on Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani. He shared that recording the hit track Pehla Pyaar during that period felt like the 'biggest heartbreak' for him.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal shared, "Working on Kabir Singh was the biggest heartbreak for me. It was because I was going through a very difficult phase emotionally. The girl I was in a relationship with at that point in time married someone else." Further, he said that they dated for five years, from 2014 to 2019, and her parents did not want their daughter to associate with anyone from the film industry.
He added, "I was about to perform a gig when she called me and said she is getting married, but she would elope if I came to her. But, I guess the SRK from DDLJ in me woke up and said, 'No, if your parents can’t accept my religion and respect my career, then I wish you the best.'"
Amaal added that the incident deeply 'broke' him, especially because people often assume he is Muslim only because of his father. He clarified that his mother is a Saraswat Brahmin Hindu, and he visits Mount Mary Church in Mumbai's Bandra whenever he feels empty. He shared that his family is spiritual and believes in God—but they do not fear God.
Amaal shared how his ex's family were like he is from a Islamic background, while the truth is that there is not even I of Islam in him and he does not follow the religion to the T.
While the heartbreak was painful, the singer believes it all happened for the best. He said he needed that moment of clarity, to understand that if someone is judging him based on his surname or his identity in Bollywood, then the relationship would not have worked in the long run. He added that he needs broad-minded people in his life.
