Two booked for duping DSP of Rs 22.2 lakh in Mohali

A Mubarikpur-based shopkeeper was booked for allegedly duping his friend and Punjab Police Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Rs 22.26 lakh.

The police have booked Harwinder Singh Gulati and his son Karanpreet Singh for allegedly duping Goindwal Sahib DSP Atul Soni.

A former international handball player and bodybuilder, Soni, had submitted a complaint to the Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) on April 18 after which the probe was handed over to a Superintendent of Police (SP)-level officer and further referred to the District Attorney.

Based on his recommendation, a case was registered against the father and son at the Goindwal Sahib police station on July 10 evening.

Soni, who was earlier posted as Dera Bassi staion house officer (SHO) in 2014, shared a close relationship with Harwinder Singh, who ran chicken corner. Sources said it appears to be a case of “breach of trust”.

Soni, who has been posted in the border area, had and invested his father’s retirement funds in buying property in association with Harwinder in 2021. However, the accused was evading completing the documentation and later refused to pay the money back. “All I want is my money back,” he said, adding that the accused also have two Arms Act cases registered against them.

Notably, Soni, then with the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) had in January 2020 been booked for allegedly Qassaulting and firing at his wife at tQQheir Sector-68 house. A case of attempt to murder, domestic violence and the Arms Act was registered at the Phase 8 police station.

In 2012, he was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi with 46 live rounds while boarding a flight to Manila, Philippines.
