Cops arrest three for cyber fraud with two Chandigarh residents

The UT police have arrested three persons in two cases of cyber fraud.

In two separate high-value cyber fraud cases, the Cyber Crime Police Station, UT Chandigarh, has arrested three individuals involved in duping residents of Chandigarh of over Rs 36 lakh.

In a case dated June 25, 2024, the complainant, Dr Chhitranjan Singh Brar of Sector 39-B, was defrauded of Rs 34.2 lakh by fraudsters impersonating RBI officials, promising premature release of insurance policies with bonuses. The fraud spanned multiple transactions. Technical surveillance traced the calls to Odisha, Jharkhand and eventually to Manimajra where Afzal Hussain, 31, was arrested. His interrogation led cops to Sonu, 37, who was supplying SIM cards and fraudulent bank accounts used in the scam. He was apprehended in West Bengal on July 8. The police seized 17 mobile phones, a laptop, numerous SIM cards, cheque books and ATM cards in the case.

In another FIR dated April 26 of this year, Shukla Mahajan of Sector 39-B stated that she received multiple OTP alerts on February 28 linked to unauthorised withdrawals to the tune of Rs 2 lakh from her bank account to an account of one Waris Ali, 29. He was arrested in Kolkata on July 10.

Chandigarh
