17,511 cases settled at National Lok Adalat

As many as 17,511 cases were disposed of during the National Lok Adalat held at the District Courts Complex in Sector 43 here today.

Among the settled cases were 14,684 traffic challans involving amount of Rs 1,82,07,900, seven criminal compoundable cases, 2,231 cases under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 42 motor accident claim cases, 121 matrimonial/family disputes and 103 civil suits and rent cases. Besides, 11 executions, 11 arbitration cases, two civil/rent appeals, 26 cases under Section 125 of the CrPC and 10 criminal appeals were also disposed of.

Seven cases of dispute were settled by the Labour Court, 78 by state and district consumer commissions, 286 by the Debt Recovery Tribunal-I, 150 by the DRT-III, and 343 mutations by Tehsildar (Revenue).

In a matrimonial dispute, a couple appeared before the court of Puneet Mohan Sharma, Additional District & Sessions Judge, UT. They had got married on November 18, 2012, in Chandigarh. Due to some issues, they had been living separately since September 26, 2021. Thereafter, the husband filed a divorce petition in the court. The matter was taken up by the court in National Lok Adalat and the dispute was amicably settled, with both the parties uniting again.

Some traffic challans were waived after the violators offered ‘genuine’ reasons. A challan of a bus, which was taking poor children to a school, was waived. A minor boy who was challaned was exonerated after he told the court that there was no one at home and he was taking his grandmother to a doctor for check-up.

Thirteen benches headed by serving judicial officers were constituted in the District Courts, Sector 43, as part of the National Lok Adalat. HS Grewal, District & Sessions Judge, and Sunil Kumar, Secretary, District Legal Service Authority, Chandigarh, appealed litigants to resolve their disputes through Lok Adalats.
