Karnal among cleanest cities, to be awarded by President
Karnal has been selected for the Swachh Survekshan Award, recognising it among India’s cleanest cities. The announcement was made by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, making Karnal Municipal Corporation (MC) the first in Haryana to receive this honour. The award ceremony will be held on July 17 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu will present the award. Karnal’s detailed ranking is expected to be announced at the same event.
According to MC officials, this milestone reflects months of dedicated efforts, innovative strategies and the unwavering commitment of all stakeholders involved in the city’s sanitation drive.
Karnal Mayor Renu Bala Gupta congratulated the Sanitation Department, safai mitras and residents, crediting their combined efforts for achieving this distinction. “This honour is a result of the collective efforts of our sanitation workers and the cooperation of our citizens,” she said. She also underlined the impact of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2, 2014, in shaping India’s cleanliness movement.
MC Commissioner Dr Vaishali Sharma stated, “Our safai mitras are the true heroes of this achievement, working tirelessly in challenging conditions to keep the city clean.” She also thanked residents for their continued support.
Dr Sharma further noted that the award was more than a recognition, it symbolised the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development and public welfare. “It reflects the power of collaborative governance where policymakers, implementers and citizens unite for a shared goal,” she said. She urged all stakeholders to treat this as a stepping stone towards further innovation and sustainability.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashok Kumar also congratulated the sanitation staff and safai itras for their dedication during Swachh Survekshan 2024. He said the next target for Karnal was to secure the top rank among India’s cleanest cities, which would require even more focused and consistent efforts.
Meanwhile, Sonipat city has been conferred with the Minister’s Award for Excellence in Sanitation at the state level.
