Delhi sees 8.4 pc dip in overall crime

The national capital has recorded an 8.4 per cent decline in overall crime in the first half of 2025 as compared to the same period last year, according to the data released by the Delhi Police on Saturday.

There is a notable 10 per cent decrease in rape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases during the first six months of 2025 as compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

From January 1 to June 30, 2025, a total of 1,18,822 cases were registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC), marking a fall of nearly 10,000 cases from 1,29,693 during the first half of 2024.

Heinous crimes, including murder, rape, robbery, and kidnapping, saw an overall decline of 13.13 per cent as compared to 2023 and 10.39 per cent as compared to 2024. While murder cases saw a slight rise from 241 last year to 250 in 2025, the drop in rape and POCSO cases accounted for much of the improvement.

Crimes against women such as molestation and eve-teasing also showed notable decline of 11 per cent and 12.5 per cent, respectively.

Snatching incidents reduced by nearly 26 per cent, dropping from 3,381 cases in the first half of 2024 to 2,503 this year. Burglary and motor vehicle theft cases fell by 25.4 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively.

The Delhi Police attributed the overall reduction in crime to intensified surveillance, data-driven patrolling strategies, community outreach efforts and sustained crackdowns on habitual offenders.

Senior officials noted that while the figures reflect a positive trend, continuous efforts would be made to maintain public safety and address emerging crime patterns.
