Music composer and singer Amaal Mallik has never shied away from speaking about his personal and professional life. In a recent appearance on a podcast, he talked about his spending habits, and who handles his overall finances. Amaal revealed that how his personal financial choices puts strain on his already turbulent relationship with his mother.
What did Amaal Mallik say about handling his own finances?
While speaking to Siddharth Kannan, Amaal opened up about his expenditure patterns. Back in school, Amaal admits that he was a brilliant student in accounts subject. Despite having a control on his finances, he revealed that his mother isn’t happy the way he spends. “My mother has a very different relationship with money. She will never understand why the dinner bill is 20k or why I suddenly spent a lakh rupees in a single day. I am very transparent with my dad about what I spend, but I have to be careful around my mother, because she gets upset about my expenses.”
Amaal revealed that he doesn’t like to restrict himself when it comes to spending patterns. “Sometimes you are going to a party after a show, or I am taking my people out, so I spend a good amount. I am a very generous person in that sense; I don’t feel like I have to hold on to a lot of money. For me, it’s just a means to an end.” Amaal said he understands his mother’s concerns as his father and her have underwent extreme poverty. Recalling how his father couldn’t make it as composer, he said, “She was down to the last Rs 500.”
Amaal further added that how many producers promise to pay big but many times fail to do so. He added that he doesn’t care much about money, and has let go a lot of payments in his career. “There are a lot of big producers who won’t clear almost 40% of your payment, but smaller producers who don’t even have budgets don’t do this. As long as there is intent, I don’t mind working with them. I am owed around Rs 25 lakh in total, but it doesn’t matter because God has been kind, and you can make this in one night and one performance,” Amaal said.

Amaal Mallik recently made headlines when he announced his decision to cut ties with his parents. He revealed that constant comparisons with his younger brother, singer Armaan Malik, mainly made by his mother used to affect him and caused growing distance in the family.
