Chandigarh’s Jaya bags gold in badminton meet

With three gold medals, one silver and four bronze, trainees of the Sector 38 Sports Complex bagged maximum accolades during the 1st Yonex Sunrise North Zone Cash Prize Badminton Tournament, which concluded today.

In the girls’ U-15 final, local trainee Jaya Verma outclassed Kabit Kaur Anhad 15-13 15-6. Panchkula’s Bhavna Chahal and Aradhya Singh of Amritsar shared the third position. In the girls’ U-11 title clash, Ditya Arora of Sirsa overpowered Patiala’s Aliyana Goel 15-9 15-9. Arnaaz Kaur of Shivalik Academy and Pragun from the host venue claimed the joint third position.

Yashna from Karnal made a stunning comeback to win the girls’ U-13 title against Ambala’s Aunika Duggal. Yashna lost the first game, but after a close fight made a 15-13 comeback in the next. In the final, it was again a cut-throat competition between the two, but Yashna logged a 15-10 win to bag the title. Riddhi Batra of Jaipur and Pawani Verma of the Sector 38 complex won the joint third position.

Rakshit Singh Mehra of Rajasthan won the boys’ U-11 final by recording an easy 15-5 15-4 win over Jammu’s Utkarsh Singh Bhau. Local challenger Hiyan Yadav and Jalandhar’s Vansh Sharma shared the third position. Abhijay Anand of the TSBA won the boy’s U-15 final by routing Harsh Khandpal 16-14 15-8. Samrit Mehla of Karnal along with Aarush Sharma from the TSBA bagged the third position.

Ans Kumar Khare of Sector 38 Coaching Centre defeated Samrala’s Harshbir Singh Dhillon 15-11 15-6 to bag the boys’ U-13 final, while Rakshit Singh Mehra of Rajasthan and Shrayansh Dhaiya of the TSBA finished joint third. Amritsar’s Akhil Arora won an easy boys’ U-17 final against Arnav 15-11 15-5, while Kushagr Bajaj of Sector 38 and Kritagya Singh of Amritsar finished third.

Ridhima Saini of Sector 38 overpowered a tough challenge by Samrala’s Gurleen Kaur to win the girls’ U-17 title 16-18 15-1 15-6. Amritsar’s Samaira Arora and Aradhya Singh shared the third spot.

Geeta Aggarwal, honorary general secretary, Chandigarh Badminton Association, and the organising secretary of the tournament, along with Surinder Mahajan, senior vice-president (Admin), awarded the winners. Chotu Sharma, Director, CS Soft Solutions India Pvt Ltd, and Col Raj Parmar, senior vice-president, CBA, were also present. Over 750 boys and girls from seven northern states participated in the tournament.
