Gurugram undertakes drain cleaning work following heavy rainfall

In response to the waterlogging caused by recent heavy rains, the Haryana Government has put all civic teams of Gurugram on high alert, seeking reparative measures on war footing. Teams from the Municipal Corporation, GMDA, Public Works Department and disaster management have been deployed to identify the key crises areas and do the needful.

The teams are working on damaged clogged drains, temporary pumping stations and specialised equipment to remove water from the affected areas. Drain cleaning and streamlining of the drainage system are being carried out on a war footing to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.

An official spokesman said Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini had issued clear directives to officials to maintain constant vigilance and take prompt, effective action. Efforts were being made to ensure that public life was disrupted as little as possible due to waterlogging. The government has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in waterlogged areas and cooperate with disaster management teams.

“Regular updates are being shared through social media and other communication channels to keep the public informed. The Haryana Government remains sensitive to public concerns and is taking all necessary steps to address the situation, while also viewing constructive criticism as an opportunity for improvement. Our goal is to resolve waterlogging issues in Gurugram and build a resilient infrastructure to prevent such challenges in the future,” read a statement issued by state government. Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar stated while heavy rain in short span threw Gurugram off the gear, the authorities managed to keep the city going.

“Teams from multiple departments remained active throughout the night to address the impact of the rain and prevent disruptions for the public. To support ongoing drainage operations and reduce road congestion, a ‘work from home’ advisory was issued the following morning. The temporary drain constructed by the district administration near Narsinghpur on NH-48, specifically for water discharge from the service lane, proved to be highly effective. Despite overnight rainfall, there was no waterlogging in either service lane, unlike in previous instances when both lanes remained flooded for two to three days. By the afternoon of the next day, water was successfully drained from the district’s main roads,” said Kumar.

Gurugram MC Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya agreed, saying they had special night teams on duty that pumped water out of a majority of the city as soon as possible.

He further said in view of the upcoming rains, the corporation teams had been put on alert mode and the control rooms were actively monitoring. He appealed to all Gurugram residents not to throw garbage, plastic or any undesirable object in the sewerage and drainage line. It obstructed the drainage system and the situation of waterlogging could become serious.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rajesh Kumar Mohan said the traffic police had proactively prepared for the rainy season, which enabled smooth and efficient traffic management during heavy rainfall.
