Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train: Is the Japanese bullet train no longer set to run between Ahmedabad and Mumbai? Earlier, reports had claimed that instead of the Japanese bullet train, the country’s first highly ambitious Ahmedabad-Mumbai high-speed corridor (bullet train project) will now feature a semi-high-speed Vande Bharat train built with indigenous technology. However, the fast Train Corridor and Railway Department has stated that the reports are completely false.

Speaking about the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train, a senior official from the Railway Ministry talking to Live Hindustan stated that the work on the Surat-Bilimora (50-kilometer) section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor is in its final stages.

He also informed that a trial run of the Vande Bharat train will begin by the end of the year. By 2027, the general public will be able to travel on the Vande Bharat (sitting) train. Two Vande Bharat trains, each with eight coaches, will operate on this route. Although the maximum speed is 280 km/h, the trains will run at 250 km/h.

What are the claims?

As per the Live Hindustan report, Japan had set the cost of each bullet train coach at Rs 16 crore when the agreement for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai high-speed corridor project was signed. However, last year, Japan increased the price to more than three times the original amount. At the time of supply, the cost per coach was raised to Rs 50 crore. As a result, a 16-coach bullet train would now cost ₹800 crore.
