Toyota’s Chairman Urges Preparation Over Guesswork in the Push to Cut Carbon

When Toyota Motor Corporation convened its 2025 General Shareholders’ Meeting—drawing a record 6,752 attendees—Chairman Akio Toyoda used the occasion to underscore a simple but powerful principle: in the race toward carbon neutrality, preparation matters far more than speculation.

Fighting Carbon Now, Not Chasing Trends

Global warming, Toyoda reminded listeners, “is a problem we must tackle as global citizens, and one which the automotive industry is confronting head-on.” Yet instead of pinning all hopes on a single technology, Toyota has pursued what it calls a “multi-pathway strategy.” From classic hybrids to fuel-cell vehicles and battery electric models, the company has always focused on “doing what we can right now” to drive down CO₂ emissions.

To date, Toyota has sold 27 million electrified vehicles—mostly hybrids—a figure that, by Toyota’s calculations, equates to the emissions savings of nine million battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). “While the public discussion is always about BEVs or hybrids,” Toyoda said, “at Toyota we have been steadily tackling global warming by doing whatever we can to lower CO₂ emissions right now, knowing that our only enemy is carbon.”

“Mobility for All” Means Many Solutions

Toyota’s insistence on multiple powertrains reflects its ambition to deliver “Mobility for All,” irrespective of geography or infrastructure. As Toyoda put it, “Each country has its own unique energy situation. Delivering mobility everywhere means serving every country, every road. All of us, from our leadership down, are working hard to ensure that no one is left behind.”

That commitment depends on a global network of partners: dealerships, parts suppliers, equipment providers, materials vendors, and logistics firms. “In these uncertain times,” Toyoda said, “Toyota is not going to speculate. Instead, we are teaming up with others to prepare for the future.” Speculation, he warned, often misses the mark—whereas teamwork and readiness, he believes, will invariably “make many people smile.”
