Pakistani Artistes Perform Adaptation Of Ramayana With AI Visuals In Karachi; Watch Video

In a groundbreaking cultural moment, Pakistani theatre group Mauj brought the Indian epic Ramayana to life on stage in Karachi, and it is being praised for both its bold storytelling and innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

According to media reports, the adaptation was staged over the weekend at the Karachi Arts Council, located in Pakistan's Sindh province, and marks a rare but celebrated instance of Hindu mythology being portrayed in Pakistan's mainstream art scene.

Directed by Yoheshwar Karera, the performance used AI to enhance visual storytelling, lighting, and stage effects, infusing the ancient tale with a modern, immersive touch. Karera said he never felt threatened or feared backlash for staging the Hindu epic.

"To me, bringing the Ramayana to life on stage is a visual treat and shows the Pakistani society is more tolerant than it is often given credit for," he said, according to a report in PTI.

The play has been well received by audiences and critics alike, applauding the production’s effort to bridge cultures through art.

Producer and lead actress Raana Kazmi, who portrays Sita, said she was drawn to the idea of transforming the ancient legend into a living, breathing experience for local audiences.

Veteran art and film critic Omair Alavi praised the sincerity in storytelling, as well as the vibrant visuals. He said the dynamic lighting, live music, colourful costumes, and evocative designs all added to the grandeur of the show. He also stated that the narrative is top class as the Ramayana is a story that resonates with millions across the world.

The production stands as a rare cultural crossover in Pakistan’s theatre landscape, receiving applause for promoting dialogue and mutual appreciation through mythological storytelling.
