Video of CM Omar Abdullah jumping over a wall goes viral, know the reason

Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah was placed under house arrest but he broke the security barricades and climbed the boundary wall of Mazar-e-Shuhada (Martyr Memorial) to pay tribute to the martyrs. Know the whole matter…

Jammu and Kashmir: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday broke security barricades and scaled the boundary wall of Mazar-e-Shuhada (Martyrs’ Memorial) to pay homage to Kashmiris killed in 1931 while protesting against Dogra rule. Omar Abdullah said security forces prevented him from reaching the memorial located in the old city of Srinagar. Martyrs’ Day is being observed in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, July 13. The chief minister said he reached the place on Monday without informing anyone as he was not allowed there on Sunday. He claimed he was put under house arrest.

I came without informing them- said CM

Abdullah said, “It is unfortunate that on the orders of those who claim responsibility for maintaining law and order, we were not allowed to read Fatiha here yesterday. People were confined to their homes. When the doors opened and I told the control room that I want to come here, a bunker was built in front of my door and it was not removed till late night. Today I did not tell them anything. Without informing them, I sat in the car and came here.”

CM made a harsh comment, said- look at their shamelessness

The National Conference leader said that the security forces tried to stop him from reaching the memorial even today and asked under which law this was done. The CM said, “Look at their shamelessness. Today also they tried to stop us. We parked the car at Nauhatta Chowk. They built a bunker in front of us and tried to misbehave with us. These policemen in uniform sometimes forget the law. I want to ask them under which law did they try to stop us today? These restrictions are a thing of the past. They say this is a free country, but sometimes they feel that we are their slaves. We are not slaves of anyone. If we are slaves, we are slaves of the people.”

Why is July 13 observed as Martyrs’ Day in Jammu and Kashmir?

On July 13, 1931, the army of the then Maharaja Hari Singh Dogra fired on a group of Kashmiri protesters outside Srinagar jail. The protesters had supported Abdul Qadir, who was jailed and charged with sedition for calling on Kashmiris to raise their voice against the Dogra ruler. 22 protesters were killed in the firing that day. For the last 70 years, 13th July is celebrated as a historic day in Kashmir and is marked as the first political awakening of Kashmir.
