Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has a realistic chance of becoming a Liverpool striker this summer, English media reports said.

The 28-year-old French forward Mateta is also wanted by AC Milan, but Liverpool's preference for a proven Premier League goalscorer may result in offering the former Lyon striker a better deal than the Serie A side. Contracted until 2027, the tall striker had managed 17 goals and four assists last season.

Liverpool representatives already had initial discussions with Mateta and his agents in Paris, French news outlet Foot Mercato claimed, confirming the transfer rumour. The defending English champions are willing to shell out €50 million to €60 million for the service of the striker, whose current market value is estimated to be €30 million by Transfermarkt. Experts find no reason for the Eagles to turn down any offer above €50 million for their forward. The club is also expecting mouth-watering bids for their centre-back Marc Guehi. Liverpool are expected to fight Newcastle United to sign the English defender in light of Ibrahima Konate's willingness to join Real Madrid.

The 6 ft 4 in tall striker is a monster when it comes to aerial duels. Under Oliver Glasner, his finishing skills have also improved, along with his runs into the box and the ability to position himself well to receive passes and meet crosses.

The future of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz remains uncertain as they are linked to Napoli and Barcelona respectively. The club also lost Diogo Jota to an unimaginable tragedy, making reinforcements in the attacking department necessary despite the arrival of Florian Wirtz. Mateta is among the cheaper proven strikers available in the market, as Chelsea are demanding over €115 million for Nicolas Jackson, while Alexander Isak of Newcastle United may cost no less than €96 million.

Meanwhile, Liverpool beat second-tier Preston 3-1 in their pre-season friendly of the season at Deepdale.
