Delhi to get 7 super speciality ICU centres, says CM Rekha
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday inaugurated the newly constructed Yatharth Multi-Speciality Hospital in Model Town, North Delhi, unveiling her government’s ambitious plan to transform the Capital into India’s premier medical hub. The facility will also provide services under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, offering free and quality healthcare to economically weaker sections.
Speaking at the inauguration, CM Gupta emphasised that her administration is committed to building a healthcare system where “no patient leaves disappointed.” As part of this vision, the government is converting seven previously incomplete hospital projects into super speciality ICU centres, each focused on treating specific life-threatening conditions such as cancer, organ transplants and high-risk pregnancies.
“Our aim is not just to expand healthcare facilities, but to make them accessible, transparent and people-centric,” Gupta said. “We want patients from across the country — and even abroad — to trust Delhi as a reliable and world-class medical destination.”
The Chief Minister said the new ICU centres would also help reduce severe shortage of critical care beds in the city. “It is our dream that no citizen is denied treatment — neither due to financial constraints nor due to lack of infrastructure,” she said.
Highlighting the challenges inherited by her administration, CM Gupta criticised previous governments for poor planning and mismanagement. She recalled the Covid-19 crisis when hospitals in Delhi ran out of beds, leading to avoidable tragedies.
“At one point, there were only 0.42 hospital beds per 1,000 people. Our 38 government hospitals had a total of just six MRI machines and 12 CT scanners — a shocking number for a city of this scale,” she remarked.
Gupta assured citizens that her government is actively working to modernise the system, addressing long-standing shortages of doctors, medicines and medical equipment. “Delhi will soon witness a major transformation in its medical landscape,” she promised.
The newly opened Yatharth Hospital is equipped with cutting-edge medical technology and offers a wide range of multi-specialty services. It is expected to significantly boost healthcare access in North Delhi and contribute to the government’s broader vision of a “Healthy and Empowered Delhi.”
With its integration into the Ayushman Bharat network, the hospital will also act as a lifeline for underprivileged communities, ensuring that cost is no longer a barrier to life-saving treatment.
