Samruddhi Expressway: Over 11 Lakh Vehicles Used Mumbai-Nagpur Mega Highway In One Month After Final Stretch Opened; ₹90 Crore Collected in Toll
Mumbai: In a major boost to Maharashtra’s infrastructure utility, over 11.23 lakh vehicles travelled through the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg in the month following the opening of its final stretch on June 5. This marks a nearly 32 per cent increase in monthly vehicular traffic compared to the January–May average, according to data released by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
The surge in vehicle movement has also led to a sharp rise in toll revenue. In the span between June 6 and July 6, the expressway generated Rs 90 crore in toll collection, significantly higher than the previous months, reported The Indian Express.
Before the completion of the final 76-km stretch from Igatpuri to Amane, the expressway saw an average monthly footfall of 8.5 lakh vehicles. However, with the full 701-km route from Nagpur to Mumbai now operational, the expressway has become the preferred route for both passenger and commercial traffic, reducing travel time between the two cities to around eight hours.
Details On Toll Collection
Out of the total vehicles recorded during the past month, around 1.97 lakh vehicles crossed the Amane toll plaza in Thane district alone, contributing Rs 19.2 crore in toll revenue. Meanwhile, the Khutghar toll plaza near Shahapur saw 27,612 vehicles and generated Rs 98 lakh in collections.
Since the initial stretch of the Samruddhi Mahamarg was inaugurated on December 11, 2022, the expressway has handled over 2.24 crore vehicles. With the final section now in operation, average daily traffic on the expressway has risen to approximately 37,000 vehicles.
Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 61,000 crore, the access-controlled expressway aims to improve connectivity between eastern and western Maharashtra. MSRDC officials say they expect the traffic volume to grow steadily in the coming months, especially with amenities and service infrastructure being enhanced along the route to accommodate the rising demand.
The expressway, hailed as a key milestone in Maharashtra’s transport development, is now being monitored closely to ensure smooth operations and safety for the increasing number of users.
