'Harry Potter' reboot series commences filming, with makers of 'Succession'

A Harry Potter reboot, in the form of a series, was announced recently by HBO Max, with Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout cast as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. Production has officially commenced, with a first behind-the-scenes still of Dominic McLaughlin in the Harry Potter costume released by the makers.
Mark Mylod, who directed multiple episodes of Succession, in addition to contributions on shows like Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, and Entourage, is involved in a directing and executive producer capacity alongside showrunner Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession and His Dark Materials.
The upcoming series will be based on the seven popular books, each of which were turned into movies with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the titular roles. A press release also mentions that the series aims to be a “faithful adaptation” of the books, filled with “fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years”.
This April, HBO had also confirmed that John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu and Nick Frost would don the roles of Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, and Rubeus Hagrid, respectively. Further two guest roles have also been filled: Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, approved the new cast and expressed her excitement, “All three are wonderful. I couldn’t be happier.”
According to reports, the series is expected to debut in June 2026, 15 years after the release of the last film in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
