Cops crack down on tobacco near schools
In a strong move to protect youth from tobacco exposure, the Dehra police launched a district-wide crackdown under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003. Conducted in a single day, the campaign focused on areas near schools, colleges, and coaching centres. Officers issued 210 challans and collected Rs 34,500 in fine.
The drive targeted hotspots like local markets and public gathering zones, where products such as Kuber Khaini, Cool Lip, Pata Spit and bidis were seized. The initiative aims to curb students’ exposure to both passive smoking and easy access to tobacco products.
Police officials reaffirmed their commitment to public health and urged citizens to report violations. Authorities emphasised that regular monitoring will continue to ensure a tobacco-free zone around educational institutions. The enforcement marks a major step toward stricter COTPA implementation and youth protection.
