54 deaths in hit-&-run cases in Ludhiana

Fifty-four people have died in hit-and-run cases in Ludhiana in the first six months of the year. Official data shows the city has reported 83 such accident cases between January 1 and June 30.

According to sources, the actual casualties may be well above the official number as all deaths could not have been reported. The dead included six women while 38 persons suffered injuries.

25 deaths in Amritsar

Meanwhile, in Amritsar district, as many as 24 hit-and-run cases were registered between January 1 and July 15 this year.

As many as 25 people died in these accidents while 22 were injured. Last year, 62 people lost their lives in 97 reported accidents on in Amritsar city.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, hit-and-run incidents accounted for 18.1 per cent of total road accident deaths nationwide. The ministry’s latest report reveals that pedestrian fatalities remain alarmingly high, with 18 per cent deaths in urban areas and 13 per cent in rural zones, like the one in which legendary 114-year-old marathoner Fauja Singh was killed.
