Mumbai Crime: 2 Individuals Arrested For ₹1.15 Crore Jewellery Theft In Vile Parle; Stolen Ornaments Worth ₹80.60 Lakh Recovered
Mumbai: The Juhu police arrested two individuals for allegedly stealing 2,469 grams of gold and diamond ornaments worth Rs 1.15 crore. The accused allegedly committed the theft on June 28 at a locked flat, Springwell Building, Gulmohar Road, Ashok Nagar Society, Vile Parle West.
The accused have been identified as Sunny Pawar, 25, and Rahul Mudane, 22. Pawar was arrested in Punjab, and Mudane was arrested in Navi Mumbai, and are both history-sheeters. The police recovered a portion of the ornaments worth Rs 80.60 lakh, a scooter, and a mobile phone used during the crime.
According to the FIR, the complainant and his family had gone to South Africa for a vacation between June 23 and July 5. Upon returning, they found that a theft had occurred at their residence located in an upscale area of Vile Parle.
The accused reportedly entered the house through a window and allegedly stole 2,469 grams of gold and diamond ornaments worth Rs 1.15 crore, which were kept in two cupboards in the bedroom. The ornaments were secured in iron lockers inside the cupboards. Subsequently, the accused fled after committing the crime on June 28.
The exact date of the theft was not immediately known; hence, the first challenge for the police was to determine when the incident had occurred. During the investigation, they discovered that only one CCTV camera was working in the building. The camera was installed at the back side of the building, and the footage quality was poor.
However, Assistant Police Inspector Ranjit Chavan and his team examined 12 days’ worth of CCTV footage. During the review, they found footage confirming that the theft took place on June 28, between 2 am and 4:30 am.
On the same day, the accused Sunny Pawar left his Mumbai house with his wife. Using human intelligence and technical surveillance, the police traced him to Zirakpur, Punjab, on July 12. During his interrogation, it was discovered that Rahul Mudane was in Koparkhairane, Navi Mumbai.
Subsequently, the next day, the police arrested the second accused as well. Two theft cases have been filed against Pawar in Versova and Santacruz in the past. Mudane has also been booked in similar cases by the Versova and Amboli police stations in the past.
The operation was carried out by Assistant Police Inspector Ranjit Chavan under the guidance of Sunil Jadhav, Senior Police Inspector of Juhu Police Station.
