Tech talent unleashed as 720 get degrees at IIT Ropar convocation

As many as 720 degrees were awarded as IIT Ropar celebrated its 14th annual convocation today at its campus today. Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s former chairperson Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, the chief guest delivered the convocation address.

The chief guest in his address said, “India imports nearly 90 per cent of its crude oil and 60% of gas. Energy independence by 2047 is our collective goal. Graduates today have a unique opportunity to shape this journey through innovation, reliability, and integrity.”

Institute director Rajeev Ahuja presided over the ceremony, saying 354 BTech, 181 MTech, 69 MSc, 114 PhD, and two BTech-MTech Dual degrees were awarded this year. “This marks a 31.87 per cent increase in the number of graduating students compared to last year,” he said.

According to the information, the students achieved 80.06 per cent placements, an average CTC of Rs 23.07 lakh per annum, with 85 students receiving pre-placement Offers. The highest placements were recorded in Computer Science Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, and Electrical Engineering.

Ahuja further said IIT Ropar’s academic excellence was recognised through various medals and awards, including the President Gold Medal to Chavda Jayrajsinh and the Director Gold Medal to Dhananjay Goel, both from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Several students received institute silver medals, best PhD thesis awards, and certificates of merit across disciplines.

The director further said 30 per cent of India’s deep-tech agri startups now come from the institute, which has also launched a BTech in Digital Agriculture and is developing a Large Language Model (LLM) for agriculture for the Ministry of Agriculture.

“We want to be a trendsetter, and our students are our biggest ambassadors. You are the flag-bearers of IIT Ropar, and through your achievements, the institute gains visibility and pride,” he added.

Adil Zainulbhai, chairperson of the Board of Governors, encouraged graduates to remain connected with their alma mater and contribute meaningfully to its continued growth, adding, “Success brings recognition, and your roots at IIT Ropar will always define you.”

To mark the occasion IIT Ropar also launched two platforms, the Corporate, Alumni, Placements and Strategies (CAPS) portal and the revamped Career Development and Placement Centre (CDPC) portal.
