Visually challenged minor found pregnant in Karnal

A 16-year-old visually impaired and mentally challenged girl was found to be six-month pregnant after allegedly being raped repeatedly by some youths from her neighbourhood over the past few months.

The case came to light when District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Chairperson Umesh Chanana noticed the girl on a street. After inquiry, it was found that she was not only blind but also mentally challenged. A medical examination confirmed her pregnancy.

During counselling, the girl revealed that two-three youths from the neighbourhood entered her home and assaulted her when her parents were away for work. When her parents learned of the situation, they were allegedly threatened with dire consequences by the accused and their families.

The girl is currently under the care of the CWC, which has written to the Civil Surgeon, requesting the formation of a medical board to decide on either medical termination of pregnancy or safe delivery.

City SHO Parveen Kumar confirmed that a case had been registered, and the police have arrested one person in this connection. However, the main accused is absconding.
