MCD’s ‘one road – one day’ drive to revamp city streets from Sept 1
In a bid to give Delhi’s roads a much-needed facelift ahead of the anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission on October 2, the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has cleared several proposals aimed at improving civic amenities in the Capital.
During the Standing Committee meeting held on Wednesday, chairperson Satya Sharma announced the launch of the “One Road – One Day” initiative inspired by the Swachh Bharat Mission. Under the plan, one major road in each of the MCD’s 12 zones will undergo comprehensive repair and beautification every day starting September 1.
“This initiative will focus on road repair, cleaning, fixing footpaths, pruning trees, restoring streetlights, removing encroachments and overall beautification. The goal is to make visible improvements on the ground before the anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission,” Sharma said, adding that the drive would help improve Delhi’s image and bring much-needed relief to residents.
The Standing Committee also took a tough stand on illegal meat shops, directing officials to ensure that no meat shop operates within 100-metre radius of schools and religious places. Any shop found operating without a valid licence would be sealed immediately, Sharma said. The issue of stray dogs also came up for discussion, with instructions issued to frame a new policy for their management.
In another move aimed at decongesting busy areas, the committee approved a proposal for an automated multilevel puzzle parking facility at Bharat Darshan Park in Punjabi Bagh. The high-tech parking system is expected to ease parking woes at the park and streamline traffic in the vicinity.
The committee cleared the setting up of an ingesta/dung processing plant at the Ghazipur Slaughterhouse — a step expected to strengthen cleanliness and promote better waste management in East Delhi. A proposal to improve garbage collection and sanitation in the Central Zone was also approved.
“The discussions during the meeting were positive and constructive. Councillors shared meaningful suggestions that were incorporated to arrive at practical, citizen-centric solutions,” Sharma said.
