Uttar Pradesh Assembly Becomes First In India To Launch AI Training For Legislators
In a pioneering move, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly is set to become the first in the country to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) training sessions for its members. Professors from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur will lead these sessions, aimed at enhancing the legislative efficiency and technological proficiency of MLAs through the use of cutting-edge AI tools.
The training sessions are expected to take place either midway or at the end of the upcoming Monsoon Session. Participation will be entirely voluntary. The initiative is designed to help lawmakers understand how AI can aid in drafting laws, analyzing policy, reviewing documents, and connecting with public sentiment more effectively.
“This is a welcome step. Technology is evolving fast, and we legislators must keep pace if we want to serve the public better,” said O.P. Srivastava, BJP MLA from Lucknow East. “AI can help us draft sharper questions, understand constituency-level data, and even anticipate the implications of policy decisions.”
His view was echoed by Rajeshwar Singh, another legislator from Lucknow’s Sarojini Nagar constituency, said, “We often deal with huge volumes of information, from law books to public petitions. AI can simplify this process. It can save time and help us focus on the core issue—delivering results to the people.”
He further said AI can analyze citizen feedback using social media, petitions, and surveys and can help organize and digitize old documents, speeches, and reports, making them easily searchable.
Another law maker Neeraj Bora quipped: “Artificial Intelligence will help legislators become more informed and responsive to people’s needs. It is a great leap forward. This training is timely and necessary. As technology evolves, legislators too must adapt to serve the public better.
This initiative follows a recent decision to install AI-powered cameras in the Assembly complex, part of a broader plan to make the legislature more high-tech. In the next phase, special AI support units will also be set up to help MLAs with legal research, comparative law analysis, and policy briefs.
Experts believe that this initiative will not only streamline legislative procedures but also position Uttar Pradesh as a frontrunner in India's digital legislative revolution.
Spokesman of the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Secretariat said that the training will also highlight ethical guidelines and privacy standards to ensure AI is used securely, fairly, and transparently, safeguarding citizens' personal data.
The Assembly Secretariat also plans to organize regular workshops for both legislators and their support staff to build familiarity and expertise with AI platforms. These workshops will focus on areas such as document review, legal drafting, identification of potential conflicts of interest, and interpretation of citizen feedback using social media and surveys.
Other components of the training will include using AI to digitize historical records, translate documents and speeches into multiple Indian languages, and monitor government schemes through real-time dashboards. Importantly, legislators will also be trained on ethical AI use to ensure citizen privacy, data protection, and fairness in application.
“Participation will be entirely voluntary, with no compulsion on members to attend. The goal is to help legislators understand AI tools and integrate them into their legislative responsibilities effectively,” the spokesman of the Vidhan Sabha secretariat said.
With this bold step, Uttar Pradesh is positioning its lawmakers at the forefront of a digital shift in governance, equipping them with tools to legislate more effectively, respond more swiftly, and understand the complexities of policy with greater clarity.
