Schools Shut In 2 Karnataka Districts Due To Heavy Rain, IMD Issues Red Alert For Coastal Region

Karnataka authorities have declared holidays for schools, colleges, and anganwadi centres in Udupi and Kodagu districts as torrential rains continue to lash large parts of the state under the influence of an active southwest monsoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Udupi, Kodagu, and Dakshina Kannada starting July 18, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in Coastal and South Interior Karnataka until July 23. An Orange Alert is in effect for Uttar Kannada, Mysuru, Chikmagalur, Hassan, and Chamarajanagar, while North Interior Karnataka remains under a Yellow Alert during the same period.

Rain Holiday In Karnataka

In view of the weather conditions, Kodagu District Commissioner announced a holiday for educational institutions in Madikeri, Virajpet, and Somwarpet. Udupi District Commissioner also ordered closure of schools and anganwadis today citing incessant downpours.

According to the IMD, extremely heavy rainfall was recorded in parts of Dakshina Kannada, with Mulki receiving 30 cm, and Mangaluru and Shakti Nagar recording 21 cm each.

Bengaluru Weather Update 

In Bengaluru, the IMD forecasts a generally cloudy sky with heavy rain likely. Sustained winds are expected at 40–50 kmph. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 29°C and 20°C, respectively.

Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea along the Kerala and Karnataka coasts until July 22, due to rough sea conditions.
