Mohalla Clinics offer vital healthcare access to marginalised communities

Aimed at delivering accessible and affordable healthcare to all, Ayushman Arogya Kendras, popularly known as Aam Aadmi Clinics or Mohalla Clinics, are steadily gaining ground in Phagwara.

These grassroots health facilities are currently operational in several key areas, including Har Gobind Nagar, Hadiabad, Khotra Road, Baba Gadhia, Palahi, Ranipur, Saprod, Guru Nanakpura, Atholi, and Gobindpura.

Among them, the Hargobind Nagar Mohalla Clinic stands out as a leading example of how localised healthcare initiatives can make a tangible difference in the lives of economically weaker sections of society.

According to clinic officials, the Hargobind Nagar facility sees an average footfall of 90 patients daily, offering free consultations, diagnostic tests and medicines. Basic blood samples are collected on-site, with reports made available the following day. This prompt service has significantly improved early diagnosis and enabled faster treatment—crucial for those who might otherwise lack access to timely medical care.

Dr Kamaljit Kaur, in charge of the Hargobind Nagar clinic, highlighted the clinic’s growing impact on public health. “We are witnessing a steady rise in footfall. People are gaining trust in the quality and consistency of services provided here. From routine check-ups to medication and diagnostics, we ensure that no one walks out without being attended to,” she said.

The social relevance of these clinics is best reflected in the experiences of patients. Manju Rani, a migrant worker from Bihar, shared her appreciation: “This clinic is a blessing in disguise for people like us. We don’t have to worry about high consultation fees or expensive tests. Everything is done here with respect and care,” she said, holding her prescription and a strip of free medicines.

Such testimonials underline the growing significance of Aam Aadmi Clinics, especially for daily-wage earners, migrant labourers, elderly citizens and women—many of whom previously delayed or avoided treatment due to financial hardships.

Local residents and community leaders have welcomed the expansion of the clinics across neighborhoods and have urged the government to ensure consistent staffing, availability of essential medicines and infrastructure upgrades wherever necessary.
