When and why your name gets removed from the voter list – 7 big reasons REVEALED, here’s how to add it again easily via…

Just before the upcoming elections in Bihar, the Election Commission is updating the voter list. However, the Commission has clearly said that Voter ID or Aadhaar will not be considered valid documents during this process. The matter has even reached the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has told all state election officers to carefully check and review the voter lists across the country. They say this step will help remove fake or duplicate voters from the list.

To vote in any election, your name must be on the official voter list. Sometimes, people find out right before voting day that their name is missing from the list.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Why names get removed: If you move to a new city, change your address, or if there are errors in the records, your name might be deleted.
  • How to check your name: You can easily check if your name is on the voter list by visiting the official Election Commission website.
  • How to add your name: If your name is missing, you can apply online or visit the local election office to get it added in time.

When and why your name can be removed from the voter list: 7 common reasons

  1. When you change your address: If you move from one area to another and apply for a new voter ID at the new address, your name will be removed from the voter list of your old address.
Example: You shift from Lucknow to Jaipur and update your voter ID there — your name will be removed from Lucknow’s list.
  2. In case of death: If a person dies and the family informs the election office with a death certificate, the name will be removed from the voter list.
  3. If you don’t vote for many years: If someone doesn’t vote for many years and there’s no activity, the Election Commission might remove the name after verification. This is done carefully and with notice.
  4. If the details are wrong or fake: If any wrong or fake information is found in your voter entry  like incorrect age, wrong address, or fake documents then your name can be removed after checking.
  5. If you become an NRI and choose to remove your name: If you become an NRI and fill out Form 7 to remove your name, it will be deleted from the list. Some people request removal themselves in such cases.
  6. If your name is entered twice (Duplicate Entry): If your name appears in the list more than once, one entry will be kept and the other(s) removed after checking.
  7. If you don’t confirm during voter list update: Before elections, the voter list is revised. If you don’t update your information or are not available for verification, your name may be removed.
