Chennai Set For Week-Long Rain Spell; IMD Issues Alerts For Several Tamil Nadu Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a week of rainfall for Chennai, with light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning expected in parts of the city. According to IMD, the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 34–35°C, while the minimum temperature will remain between 25–26°C. The sky is expected to remain partly cloudy.
An upper air cyclonic circulation over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and its neighbourhood—extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level—is influencing the wet weather, tilting southwestward with height.
Independent weather blogger Tamil Nadu Weatherman, posting on X, said, “KTCC (Chennai) Rain update – next few days we will be getting very good thunderstorms… Today storms are perfectly circling Chennai and should grow in size nearing Chennai and give very good spell in the next 1–2 hours. Enjoy the spells.”
Weather Alerts Across Tamil Nadu
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Nilgiris and Ghat areas of Coimbatore, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
A yellow alert has been issued for several districts including: Theni, Tenkasi, Ghat areas of Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai.

While rainfall occurred in a few places across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, dry weather prevailed in Karaikal. Madurai (AP) recorded the highest maximum temperature at 40.0°C. Karur Paramathi had the lowest minimum temperature in Tamil Nadu’s plains at 21.5°C.
Temperatures were 2–4°C above normal in isolated pockets across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Residents in Chennai and other alerted districts are advised to stay updated on local weather bulletins, and exercise caution, especially during lightning and heavy downpour events.
