A second-year BDS student at a top private university in Greater Noida hanged herself in her room at the women’s hostel on Friday night, triggering a wave of protests and outrage on the campus.
A case has been filed at the Knowledge Park Police Station in Gautam Budh Nagar, and two employees of the Sharda University have been arrested.
"Two staff members from the management of the university have been arrested based on a complaint lodged by the family members of the student," Additional DCP, Greater Noida, Sudhir Kumar, said.
Jyoti Sharma, who hailed from Gurugram, alleged in her suicide note that she had been facing mental harassment and humiliation by the staff members.
There has been no official statement from the university, but reports said the accused employees have been suspended.
"They mentally harassed me. They humiliated me. I have been under stress because of them for a long time. I want them to face the same thing. I am sorry. I can't live like this anymore. I can't," Jyoti allegedly wrote in the suicide note.
The student’s body has been sent for postmortem. A forensic team conducted a detailed inspection of the hostel room to collect any potential evidence.
The incident sparked protests by students who raised slogans against the university administration and demanded a fair probe into the incident.
