Delhi varsity Vice-Chancellor bats for nationalism

Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh has batted for educational institutions to inculcate love for the nation in students.

Speaking in a podcast, Singh said it was important to back Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pledge to build a developed India (Viksit Bharat) by 2047 and stand behind him. He batted for nationalism and stressed the need to tell children about the value of patriotism.

“This is our country. As long as we are alive, India will be a part of our existence,” he said.

Singh, whose X handle is called “yeh desh hai mera” to spread awareness about the love for the country, flagged what he called a “critical gap in the education system”, saying: “We don’t teach our children to love our country (desh prem). We don’t teach them how to feel emotionally connected to the nation. We should teach this.”

He compared the instinctive love for the nation to how people learn cricket out of passion for the game.

“Those who love cricket learn it on their own. For example, not everyone receives formal training in cricket, yet most people still learn to play it”, he said.

Urging citizens to contribute to national growth, he said, “If I am establishing a company, I am doing it for my country. It will contribute to the nation’s growth. These small efforts bring positivity within us.”

Backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, he said: “If our Prime Minister has taken a resolution to make India a Viksit Bharat, then we must support him — he cannot do it alone.”

“The love for our nation through education and the Constitution is missing today. Instilling love for the country is important, and it should be taught to students,” he emphasized.

Reflecting on the country’s journey since Independence, Singh said: “It has been 78 years since Independence, and today people are increasingly thinking only about themselves, not about the nation.”

Singh called on the youth to remember the sacrifices made by freedom fighters.

“The upcoming generation should know about the struggles and sacrifices that went into building this country,” he said.

The V-C said: “When a country grows, its value rises — and along with it, the heft of its people grows.”
