Biometric Update in Aadhaar for children: The government will now go to schools to update the biometrics of children’s Aadhaar cards, which means that parents will no longer have to visit Aadhaar. In fact, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is going to start a project to update children’s Aadhaar biometrics by going to schools, which will start in a phased manner within the next two months. Camps will be set up in schools for this work. UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar said that more than 7 crore children have not yet updated their biometrics for Aadhaar, which becomes necessary after the child turns five.
The project is currently under testing
According to a Moneycontrol report, the CEO said, “UIDAI is working on a project to update children’s biometrics through schools with the consent of parents. We are currently testing this technology and it will be ready in 45-60 days.”
Biometric update free between the ages of 5 and 7
MBU (Mandatory Biometric Update) is extremely important to maintain the accuracy and reliability of biometric data. If this update is not completed even by the age of seven, then under the current rules, the child’s Aadhaar number is at risk of being deactivated. Biometric update is free between the ages of five and seven, but a fee of Rs 100 will have to be paid if the child is older than seven years.
Kumar also said that UIDAI is planning to expand the school-based biometric update model for the second MBU, which is required after the child turns 15. Currently, Aadhaar is issued to newborns and children under five years of age without biometrics.”
Benefits of updating Aadhaar
Updated Aadhaar card facilitates access to many important services including school admission, entrance exam registration, scholarships and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes. “Aadhaar is very important for accessing benefits under many government schemes. We want children to get all the benefits on time. Through schools, our aim is to reach children in a convenient and efficient manner,” Kumar said.
As a part of this initiative, UIDAI will deploy biometric machines in each district, which will be installed in schools to ensure wider coverage.
