Monsoon Session: Congress MP Gogoi moves adjournment notice to discuss Pahalgam attack, Op Sindoor

Ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Opposition on Monday wrote to the Lok Sabha Secretary-General, demanding a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and its aftermath, stating that it is “essential to uphold democratic accountability, maintain institutional trust, and clarify India’s national security and diplomatic posture.”

In his letter, Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi wrote, “Given the gravity of the issues, ranging from loss of life and cross-border military action to foreign influence and transparency, the Government must take the House into full confidence.

“A comprehensive discussion is essential to uphold democratic accountability, maintain institutional trust, and clarify India’s national security and diplomatic posture. I hereby request permission to raise the matter.

“I seek to move an adjournment of the business of the House to discuss a matter of urgent national importance: the terror attack in Pahalgam, India’s military response through Operation Sindoor, and the political and diplomatic developments that followed.”

The brutal attack in Pahalgam claimed the lives of civilians and security personnel. highlighting the persistent threat of cross-border terrorism, Gogoi said.

The Congress leader said in response, the government launched Operation Sindoor, reportedly targeting militant infrastructure across the Line of Control. “However, the events that followed have raised serious concerns requiring immediate and detailed deliberation in this House,” he wrote.

“First, the sudden announcement of a ceasefire after the operation–without briefing Parliament–has created confusion about its terms, timing, and stakeholders. Second, the President of the United States made controversial claims suggesting the ceasefire was externally broke and that he personally intervened with Pakistan’s military leadership.

“These statements, if unchallenged, risk undermining India’s sovereign standing in regional security,” he noted.

Third, the Chief of Defence Staff made public remarks on the nature and location of Operation Sindoor at an international forum, raising questions about the protocols governing strategic disclosures, he added.
