SC grants Shreyas Talpade protection from arrest in Rs 9 crore fraud case

The Supreme Court has granted Bollywood actor Shreyas Talpade interim protection from arrest in a cheating and breach of trust case based in Haryana’s Sonipat. The decision comes on Monday after Talpade was named as one of the accused in a complaint against the Human Welfare Credit Cooperative Society for allegedly defrauding investors of Rs 9 crore.

A bench of Justices B. V. Nagarathna and K. V. Viswanathan issued notice to Haryana police and others on a plea filed by the actor.

The allegations against the credit society came to light earlier this year based on a complaint filed by Vipul Antil. According to The Print, Antil accused the firm of offering fixed and recurring deposits under the false pretence of high returns. The complaint alleged that the society assured investors that their money was secured and would be returned upon maturity.

Talpade was named in the complaint, along with actor Alok Nath, for luring investors into the scam, reportedly duping 45 investors of over Rs 9 crore.

The FIR, registered on January 22, 2025, includes charges under Sections 316 (2), 318 (2), and 318 (4) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita, related to fraud, property transfer through deception, and criminal breach of trust.

Ajeet Singh, Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP), earlier told The Print that investigations were underway and the role of the actors would be ascertained. “The main complaint is against the society that is alleged to have duped people of their money by luring them to invest. We will have to investigate what role, if any, is ascribed to Shreyas Talpade and Alok Nath,” the official said.
