Animal health camp for SC community at Palampur agri varsity

The Department of Veterinary Pathology, Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Mandi, recently organised a one-day animal health camp on “Enhancement of livestock and horse population in Scheduled Caste community through scientific interventions”. The programme was sponsored by the National Equine Research Centre. It was led by Dr RK Asrani, Head of Department (Veterinary Pathology), and Dr Rakesh Kumar, Principal Investigator of the project.

The objective of the camp was to sensitise and empower livestock farmers from the Scheduled Caste community about the scientific rearing, health, and nutrition management of livestock, particularly horses and dairy animals. On this occasion, essential medicines, deworming agents, and nutritional supplements were distributed free of cost to progressive livestock rearers.

Experts provided hands-on training on the identification, prevention, and management of common animal diseases.

Vice-Chancellor Naveen Kumar appreciated the organisers’ efforts, and said, “Such initiatives reflect the university’s commitment to inclusive development and capacity building at the grassroots level. Empowering marginalised communities with scientific knowledge and practical skills in livestock management not only enhances their livelihood security, but also contributes to rural prosperity.”

Veterinary scientist Dr Brij Vanita from KVK, Mandi, emphasised the significance of adopting scientific animal husbandry practices tailored to local climatic conditions.

KVK, Mandi, In-charge Dr Pankaj Sood said such camps played a pivotal role in strengthening the livelihoods of Scheduled Caste livestock rearers by promoting awareness and adoption of improved animal husbandry practices.

Dr Rakesh Kumar delivered a lecture on animal diseases and pathology, guiding farmers on early disease detection, diagnosis, and scientific treatment methods.
