In a shocking development in Pakistan's Balochistan, a couple fell prey to an honour killing, reportedly four years after their marriage. The video of the couple, identified as Bano Bibi and her husband Ehsan Ullah, being gunned down by a group of men in an arid Quetta desert has gone viral on the internet, causing global outrage.
Pakistan authorities arrested at least 13 people in connection with the incident after the videos of the honour killing that took place in May went viral on the internet. Earlier, eight people were named in the FIR along with 13 others who were suspected to be part of the crime.
The video captures the couple being fired at from close vicinity by men armed with pistols. The woman was asked to walk away from the vehicles before bullets were pumped at them from behind. The phone cameras also captured the duo lying dead on the barren field. There were several pickup SUVs and cars surrounding the crime scene but no sign of settlements, hinting the victims were either summoned or abducted to a remote region. At least two of the perpetrators were seen recording the murders on their phones, with one climbing into the bed of a pickup to film. THE WEEK couldn't independently verify the authenticity of the video.
Trigger Warning: Violence
An FIR filed by the Balochistan Police revealed that Bano Bibi and Ehsan Ullah were brought before a local tribal leader identified as Sardar Sherbaz Khan, who declared them guilty of engaging in an “immoral relationship” and ordered that they be killed. Some of the men directly involved in the incident, including Bano's brother, are on the run, Al Jazeera said in a report.
