Schools Represent Largest single Philanthropic Contribution To IIT Indore
Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a bold move to address two of the most pressing challenges—climate sustainability and public health—IIT Indore, in collaboration with the Mehta Family Foundation (MFF), has announced launch of two pioneering academic institutions: Mehta Family School of Sustainability and Mehta Family School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering on the elite institute’s campus in Indore.
Spanning over 200,000 sq ft on IIT Indore campus, the twin schools represent the largest single philanthropic contribution ever made to IIT Indore and reaffirm MFF’s longstanding commitment to building world-class academic infrastructure in India.
The school will also house three Centres of Excellence, focus on policy-relevant research and aims to educate over 1,500 sustainability professionals in the next decade. Mehta Family School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering will serve as a hub for AI-powered healthcare innovations and biomedical breakthroughs.
Offering a first-of-its-kind BTech in AI in healthcare and medical device innovation, the school will drive research across key focus areas: AI in Healthcare and Bioinformatics, Drug Discovery and Molecular Biology, Bio manufacturing and Wearable Health Technologies. Plans are also underway to establish a cutting-edge bio manufacturing hub, enabling India to scale up production of enzymes, smart proteins and APIs—critical for vaccine and therapeutic self-reliance.
Depart of Science and Technology (GoI) secretary Prof Abhay Karandikar said, ‘The Mehta Family Foundation’s ability to identify thematic areas that closely mirror the government’s science and technology priorities is commendable. Such efforts strengthen India’s innovation ecosystem and contribute meaningfully to our long-term national goals in research and education.’
IIT Indore director Prof Suhas Joshi said, ‘This collaboration with the Mehta Family Foundation is not just about two schools—it is about a new chapter in IIT Indore’s evolution. It exemplifies how academic excellence, international collaboration and social vision can intersect to address real-world challenges.’
Mehta Family Foundation founder Rahul Mehta said, ‘India needs institutions that can generate intellectual capital to lead sustainable development and healthcare reform. I am confident that IIT Indore, with its talent and location at the heart of India, will become a beacon of interdisciplinary excellence.’
By launching its 7th and 8th academic institutions in India, MFF continues to expand its impact, fostering academic ecosystems that empower over 10k students and researchers. Department of Biotechnology (GoI) secretary Dr Rajesh S Gokhale said, ‘It’s inspiring to see the convergence of engineering and biology being harnessed to address future’s grand challenges. IITs are nurturing a vibrant biotech ecosystem, and the Mehta Family Foundation’s initiatives are adding significant momentum. Their long-term vision and clear scientific agendas align well with emerging national frameworks like the Bio-E3 policy.’
School of Biosciences starts this academic year
Mehta Family School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering will start its operations from this academic year itself, whereas Mehta Family School of Sustainability will come into being from next year. School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering is going to offer 40 seats in Master of Technology, 25 seats in MSc and 25 seats in PhD courses.
