Temple priest gets 25 years in jail for sexually assaulting minor boy
A Special Fast Track Court here has sentenced a temple priest to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for the sexual assault of a minor boy. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 77,000 on the convict, Raman Giri, who originally hailed from Moga Mandi in Punjab and was serving as a priest at the Sherawali Mata Temple in Ding village, Sirsa.
The incident dates back to April 1, 2020, when the minor visited the temple and was allegedly taken to a secluded room by the accused. In his complaint, the boy’s father stated that the child returned home visibly disturbed and, after much coaxing, confided about the assault. The priest had also allegedly threatened the boy with dire consequences if he disclosed the incident to anyone.
Following the complaint, a case was registered at Ding police station. Raman Giri was arrested, along with one of his disciples. During interrogation, the priest reportedly admitted to the crime. Police collected critical evidence — including the victim’s medical reports, mobile phone data and witness testimonies — which were presented during the trial.
On Monday, the court found Giri guilty. The sentencing was pronounced today by Additional Sessions Judge Dr Naresh Kumar Singhal.
The priest was awarded 20 years under Section 4 of the POCSO Act, along with a Rs 50,000 fine, two years under Section 506 of the IPC with a Rs 2,000 fine and 3 years under Section 67-B of the IT Act, carrying a Rs 25,000 fine. The total term adds up to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment.
