Govt extends EV policy till March 2026

The Delhi Government has extended the current Electric Vehicle (EV) policy until March 31, 2026, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh announced on Tuesday. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting held earlier in the day and comes amid ongoing efforts to finalise a new, more comprehensive EV policy for the Capital.

Addressing mediapersons, Singh clarified that the extension will remain in effect either until March 31, 2026, or until a new policy is approved — whichever is earlier. He said the move was necessary to allow adequate time for wide-ranging consultations with all relevant stakeholders. These include citizens, industry experts, environmental groups and private organisations, who are expected to play a key role in shaping the future of electric mobility in Delhi.

Singh noted that the extension will also provide the government with time to address critical areas under the policy. These include strengthening the city’s EV charging infrastructure, reviewing the effectiveness of existing subsidies and waivers and devising systems for safe e-waste and battery disposal. Additionally, the government will define the roles and responsibilities of public and private sectors to create a more collaborative ecosystem for EV growth.

The current EV policy was originally launched in 2020 during the AAP government’s tenure and officially lapsed in August 2023. It has since been extended several times to avoid disruption in the city’s electric vehicle ecosystem.
