After Pahalgam, Bihar SIR becomes new flashpoint in Parliament monsoon session

Opposition MPs have moved notices in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for suspension of house business and sought discussion on intensive electoral roll revision in poll-bound Bihar. Both houses are likely to witness intense protests demanding discussions on Thursday. 

 

According to reports, Rajya Sabha MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh has given suspension of business notice in the upper house under Rule 267 and demands discussion on the constitutional and electoral implications of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar. MP Ranjeet Ranjan has also moved a notice seeking urgent discussion on SIR.

 

Opposition parties have opposed the special intensive revision of the electoral roll in Bihar, where assembly polls would be conducted later this year. Opposition charged the intensive drive would disenfranchise a large section of voters in the poll-bound state. Opposition parties have also moved the Supreme Court against the Election Commission's move.

 

The Parliament convened for the monsoon session on July 21.  Opposition's demand for an urgent discussion on Bihar's SIR comes after opposition's protest demanding urgent discussions on the Pahalgam terror attack disrupted house proceedings.

 

 

According to reports, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will move 'The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024' on Thursday. Also, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, will move 'The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024' today.

 

Both houses of Parliament had to be adjourned during the past two days owing to the opposition's protest. According to reports, extensive discussions on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor will be held in both houses of Parliament early next week.
