Delhi MC celebrates Hariyali Teej with staff; CM Rekha calls it a ‘symbol of joy, renewal’
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) celebrated Hariyali Teej with grandeur and festive spirit for the first time, bringing together its employees for a colourful gathering at the green lawns of PSOI Club, Chanakyapuri.
The event was graced by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who attended as the chief guest and joined employees in marking the vibrant festival that celebrates the arrival of the monsoon.
Addressing the gathering, CM Gupta said, “Teej is not just a celebration of tradition and togetherness — it’s a vibrant reflection of the joy and rejuvenation that Sawan brings. As sisters and daughters adorn their hands with mehendi and swing in celebration, nature, too, swings in delight, draped in lush green.”
Extending her wishes to NDMC employees, the CM also lauded NDMC’s achievements, congratulating the civic body for securing the national-level Swachh Survekshan Award for maintaining its area as the cleanest in the country. “NDMC has set a national benchmark by keeping its jurisdiction green and clean throughout the year. Let this inspire the whole of Delhi to transform into a city that is not only clean and green but also joyful and full of life. Only then can we truly create the Delhi its citizens dream of,” she said.
New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj also extended her wishes on the occasion. “Haryali Teej is not just about swings and mehendi — it’s a celebration of joy, tradition and inner strength. This festival brings our daughters together, nurturing unity and cultural pride and inspiring them to rise with confidence and courage. Today, daughters are not only dreaming big but achieving greatness in every sphere of life,” she said.
The celebration saw the presence of BJP national secretary Alka Gurjar, NDMC chairman Keshav Chandra, vice-chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, NDMC members Dinesh Pratap Singh and Sarita Tomar, and former vice-chairman and MLA Satish Upadhyay, among other dignitaries.
A large number of women employees participated with great enthusiasm, enjoying cultural performances including folk dances from Punjab, Rajasthan and Garhwal, energetic group acts, mehendi and bangle stalls, and food kiosks that recreated the festive atmosphere of traditional Teej Melas.
NDMC officials said that the festival, deeply rooted in Indian tradition and observed during the lush monsoon season, symbolizes renewal, prosperity and devotion — with women dressed in green or red attire, singing, dancing and swinging on beautifully decorated swings.
