Kamal Haasan Takes Oath As Rajya Sabha MP In Tamil; MNM Cadre Celebrate With Sweets In Chennai
Kamal Haasan, veteran actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder, was sworn in as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, formally beginning his tenure in national politics. The swearing-in ceremony in New Delhi marks a significant milestone for Haasan, who transitioned from cinema to public life through activism and electoral campaigns.
Haasan flew from Chennai to the capital on Thursday ahead of the ceremony. His entry into the Upper House comes as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), solidifying MNM’s alliance with the ruling coalition in Tamil Nadu. His nomination is widely viewed as a strategic move by the DMK to integrate Haasan’s reform-oriented platform into mainstream politics.
Over the years, Haasan has built a reputation for advocating governance reforms, science-based policy, and equitable education. Political observers expect him to use his new role to amplify these themes on the national stage. His maiden speech in Parliament is being eagerly awaited for its anticipated blend of intellect, clarity and social consciousness.

MNM, which secured around 4% of the vote share in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, gained visibility during the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, where Haasan narrowly lost in Coimbatore South. Although the party skipped the 2024 general elections, it formally joined the SPA in March this year—paving the way for Haasan’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha.
With MNM now an official ally of the DMK, the party is expected to contest the 2026 Assembly elections as part of the ruling coalition. Haasan’s induction into Parliament is seen as a significant development for both state and national politics, blending the realms of art, activism, and legislation into a new political narrative.
