New Delhi: Taking stringent action against obscene content, the central government on Friday banned several apps and websites, instructing Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to restrict their public access in India, Storyboard18 reported. According to the report, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has detected 25 links with objectionable advertisements that include pornographic content.
Banned Websites And Mobile Apps
The report listed several applications and websites, including ALTT, ULLU, Big Shots app, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab app, Kangan app, Bull app, Jalva app, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul app, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix, and Triflicks
Websites Were Violating Laws
As per the government, the above mentioned links were violating several laws, such a sSection 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Section 4 of The Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
The report cited a government notice, stating that intermediaries must remove or block unlawful content under the IT Act, 2000, and the IT Rules, 2021.
The government has emphasised Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act, 2000, which indicates that intermediaries forfeit their liability protection if they do not promptly remove or disable access to content that is being used for illegal activities, even after being notified by the relevant government authority.
The report says the MIB also used Rule 7 of the IT Rules, 2021, which means intermediaries that break the rules won’t get protection under Section 79(1) and can be punished under the law.
Illegal Gambling Websites, Apps Banned
On Wednesday, the Parliament was informed that the government has issued orders banning 1,524 illegal gambling websites and mobile apps between 2022 and June 2025.
On Wednesday, the MoS for IT informed the Parliament that the Central Government has banned a total of 1,524 illegal gambling websites and mobile apps in the last three years, between 2022- June 2025
“From 2022 till June 2025, the government issued 1,524 blocking directions related to online betting, gambling and gaming websites and mobile applications,” MoS Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, informed the Lok Sabha.
News
