The 'exploding lake' that mysteriously killed 1700 people in one blow; what exactly happened beneath the once quiet water body?

In Cameroon, West Africa, Lakes Nyos and Monoun turned deadly in the 1980s. These lakes released carbon dioxide, silently killing over 1,700 people. Lake Nyos experienced a frothy explosion, releasing a deadly cloud. Lake Monoun had a similar incident earlier. Scientists installed sensors and vented gas to prevent future disasters. Lake Kivu in Congo is also under observation now.
