Democratic Party MPs have called the treatment of foreign workers and students in the country discriminatory. This bill is likely to be introduced in the US Senate this week. However, immigration experts believe that the chances of this bill being passed are very low. MP Dick Durbin will be the co-sponsor of the bill in the Senate, while Representative Joe Lofgren will lead the bill in the House. At present, due to this bill, many Indian workers have also got hope of getting green cards.
How will Indians benefit?
If this bill is implemented, it will benefit thousands of Indian workers who are currently stuck in the backlog of employment-based green cards. Not only this, but those workers will also benefit from this bill, whose children are over 21 years of age and may now have to separate from their parents. Under the rules, children of 21 years of age either have to go to another country or obtain another visa that allows them to stay legally in the country.
A study conducted by David J. Beer of the Cato Institute in March 2023 stated that the backlog in the EB-3 and EB-2 categories is 10.7 lakh, that is, so many people are in line to get a green card. Because of this, 1.34 lakh children may have to leave the country, because by the time their parents get a green card, they will be over 21 years of age. The rules of Green Card mentioned in the bill seem to be quite simple, and thousands of Indian workers also come under its ambit.
If we talk about the benefits of students, they can also get a green card easily. If they take a degree from America, it takes them two to four years to get it. After this, one can also work on OPT for one to three years. Apart from this, if H-1B visa is obtained, then a job of three years is almost confirmed. In this way, it will not be difficult for students to fulfill the seven-year criteria.
How many people will get green cards?
MP Alex Padilla said in a statement, “This update will pave the way for giving green cards to 80 lakh people, which includes Dreamers, forcibly displaced persons, children of long-term visa holders, essential employees and high-skill workers, such as H-1B visa holders. These people have been waiting to get a green card for years.”
