Ground Report: Floods Drown Post-Kumbh Prayagraj: Over 100 Villages, Dozens of Wards Submerged
The holy city of Prayagraj, once bustling with devotees during the recently concluded Kumbh Mela, is now grappling with a crisis of a different kind — a "Baadh-Kumbh" (flood deluge). Continuous heavy rains and rising river levels have led to a grim situation where more than half a dozen low-lying areas are completely submerged. The Chhota Baghara locality is among the worst affected, where floodwaters have reached the first floors of buildings. Many residents have evacuated, while others remain stranded.Visuals from the ground show women and families stuck on upper floors, waiting for relief. Rescue teams are distributing essentials like milk, bread, and clean drinking water. In total, seven tehsils of Prayagraj have been affected, with 106 villages under flood threat. Over 6,600 people in 61 villages and around 5,500 residents across 39 city wards are battling flood-induced hardship. The situation remains tense as the Ganga River’s water level is rising at 3.375 cm/hour, while Yamuna’s level increases at 3 cm/hour. With rain continuing unabated, conditions are worsening.Chhota Baghara, known for its affordable student accommodations, now stands waterlogged, displacing hundreds of students who had come here for coaching and education.
