What triggered Madhya Pradesh mass suicide? Woman, lover arrested in fresh twist to the case

Days after four members of a family, including two teenage children, killed themselves in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, a woman and her lover have been arrested on charges of abetment to suicide.

The duo's arrest has given a fresh twist to the case that had sent shock waves across the state.

The deceased were identified as Manohar Lodhi (45), his daughter Shivani (18) and son Ankit (16), and their grandmother Phulrani Lodhi (70).

The investigation into the case revealed that Manohar’s wife Draupadi was having an affair with his childhood friend named Surendra. They continued their affair even after the family came to know about it and warned them to stop it.

Police claimed that Shivani has found her mother with the man in an intimate position many times, reported NDTV.

When the family insisted on them to stop their affair, Draupadi allegedly threatened them with filing fake cases of dowry harassment, the report said.

This has allegedly promoted her husband to take the extreme step with his mother and children by consuming sulphas tablets.

The incident occurred in Tehar village on July 26. Phulrani and Ankit died on the spot, while Shivani breathed her last during treatment at a hospital. Manohar Lodhi was referred to the Sagar district hospital but died en route, according to police.

Nandram Singh Lodhi said he heard his brother, Manohar, vomiting downstairs around 3 am. After Nandram alerted his neighbour, he summoned an ambulance. However, by the time the ambulance arrived, Nandram's mother and nephew had died.
