Weather forecast: Heavy rains to batter West Bengal and Odisha as cyclonic circulation forms over Bay of Bengal

The Indian Meteorological Department issued a Tropical weather outlook that predicted a low-pressure area over the north-west and west-central region of the Bay of Bengal. 

Heavy and very heavy rains are forecast in the Bengal region. Clouds have been gathering over Kolkata since Thursday. 

Currently, fresh upper air circulation lies over Bangladesh, the West Bengal coasts, and areas of the north-west Bay of Bengal between 3.1 and 5.8 km above the sea level. 

According to the forecast, the pressure area will have scattered low and medium clouds with an embedded intense to very intense convection over the Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, Arakan coast and Tenasserim coast (Myanmar).

The presence of the cyclone makes the weather in the region turbulent, and heavy rains are foreseen in South 24 Parganas, Purulia, West Burdwan, and Birbhum districts.

Fishermen from both West Bengal and Odisha have been barred from going out ot the sea. The IMD also forecast that the rain will continue throughout Saturday and Sunday. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri. Will see scattered heavy rains with a possibility of it continuing till Monday.

The rivers Teesta, Torsa and Jaldhaka may flow above danger levels due to the heavy rains. Hilly regions in several areas of the state may be vulnerable to landslides if heavy rain continues, according to experts. 

 

Other cyclonic formation

An upper air cyclonic circulation also lay over the south-west Bay off the North Tamil Nadu coasts in the lower & middle tropospheric levels. Another trough running from east to west from Coastal Karnataka to the central parts of the south Bay of Bengal is in the lower tropospheric levels.

The circulation is likely to cause extremely heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh. From 7th to 13th August, light or moderate rainfall can be expected in many places along with thunderstorms and lightning. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will see isolated, very heavy rainfall.                

Isolated heavy rainfall is to be expected over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh from the 7th to the 13th. Jammu and Kashmir will see very heavy rainfall on the 13th. The light and moderate rainfall will also be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the western Himalayan region.        

In the south peninsular, isolated heavy rainfall can be expected over Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Rayalaseema till 9th August. Along with the rain, there will also be strong surface winds.

The weather system has already brought extreme rainfall to the southern peninsula, with parts of Kerala and the Tamil Nadu coast being battered by heavy rainfall.
